The repair of these concrete storage silos was completed over a number of years to suit the client’s budget and also their timeline to accommodate the arrival of grain by ship.
The damaged concrete was restored and all the concrete cracks were sealed to prevent water infiltration and facilitate movement in the silo. An elastomeric coating was applied to the exterior of the silo to protect the surface. The flexible properties of the coating helped accommodate any movement in the structure.
The unique shape of the structure posed several access issues that were overcome by using custom modular suspended swing stages.
The proximity of the open water posed a concern regarding the possible runoff of construction materials during the restoration. The wash water was collected, pumped into storage tanks, filtered and disposed of in an environmentally conscience manner.
